Happy Monday, DMV. It’s Oct. 26.

Every now and then, my husband will send me videos from the wildlife cam he set up on a particularly busy trail in our yard that I’ve dubbed our “wildlife corridor.” Sometimes they just walk through. They may leave a scent, and others who pass afterward will stop for a sniff.

A week ago, in one night, these were the neighbors padding through our yard. This is the usual crew we see.

Instagram Reel

Here are screengrabs from the videos.

This Siamese cat is one of a few cats that roam the neighborhood.

We’ve seen a raccoon sleeping in the tree next door and raccoon babies on top of our shed.

The armchair where I do most of my writing in the warmer seasons is next to this corridor. Late at night, I often hear heavy footfalls and see the silhouettes of passing deer. By day, a deer family of four nibbles its way through our yard.

The camera caught this fox just as it was leaving the frame of the video.

We sometimes hear foxes squawking loudly in our neighborhood. One night a few years ago, we heard some squawks quite close by and looked out our window to see a fox and cat squaring off. The cat then swatted at the fox, which jumped in surprise and scampered off.

Lee Ferrell, 57, caught this image of a “timid chipmunk sunning on a cool autumn day on our backyard fence in Fairfax.

“I've taken a liking to ground squirrels lately. In late summer we had a different chipmunk hang out daily below our basketball goal. Due to their recurring choice location, I named it ‘Chip Jordan,’ after my favorite basketball player,” he wrote in his submission.

“Now with a new visitor who appears to enjoy traversing the dilapidated fencing, I'll name this one ‘Chip Sawyer’ and in hope it recruits friends to make repairs.”
