The joy of singing with Jacob Collier

Good morning, DMV! It’s Tuesday, Sept. 29.

I gave myself a day of slowness yesterday to save energy for a long evening last night.

I took my daughter to soccer practice. The weather, the setting sun, watching the girls on the field — it was just perfect.

Then after dropping her off at home, I went to the Strathmore to see Jacob Collier in concert. He led the audience to sing with him his songs (including my favorite, “All I need”) and covers — “Yesterday” by the Beatles, “Close to you” by the Carpenters and “Isn’t she lovely?” by Stevie Wonder.

He’s fun and funny. His command of music, the stage and the audience is phenomenal. For one song, he played guitar with his left hand and piano with his right. He was solo onstage, and we, the audience, were his chorus.

Singing with him and being part of his performance felt playful and magical. When the audience joined him for Elvis’s “I can't help falling in love with you,” I got teary … which sounds cheesy, but lately when I feel such joy, I melt.
