Heads up, dear readers: Because Saturday is the Fourth of July, tomorrow is a federal holiday, so I am taking the day off and will not send a newsletter tomorrow.
Good morning, DMV! It’s Thursday, July 2, and here’s what’s cooking:
A potentially historic heat wave with temperatures 100 degrees or higher

The “Great American State Fair” takeover on the National Mall
CO2-maxxing with a pyrotechnic display during a heat wave seems a bit much. It makes me want to hole up at home. Or go out for an adventure or dumb fun.
A friend invited me to go biking with his crew of blind cyclists. Sounds fun! Actually, I told him maybe … because I admit that 100-plus degrees gives me pause.
My family wants to go floating on the Potomac — near Brunswick, Maryland, about 50 miles upstream from the sewage spill.
Tomorrow: some “karaoke therapy” at Busboys and Poets.
Saturday: the local Fourth of July parade followed by a barbecue with neighbors.
But I’ll start the long weekend with modest ambitions. This afternoon: a public pool to people-watch and delve into a good book.

“I get up super early to walk or go for a run, as summer is not my favorite season, and I have a contentious relationship with the heat and humidity around here (I grew up in Michigan),” Shannon wrote in her submission yesterday.
“The clouds during this morning's sunrise were incredible. I peeked over my shoulder at just the right moment and caught this beam of sunlight bursting through the clouds, and it made me so happy I got out of bed early this morning.”
