Good morning, DMV! It’s Wednesday, June 17.
Yesterday was a battle against the pull to just stay in bed. I felt sluggish. Am I fighting a bug or a mood? I flipped the covers off, got up and put one foot in front of the other. It was a beautiful day, lovely and cool out.
Yoga at 10 a.m. I arrived and lay on my mat, willing myself to be present. For an hour, I let go and fell into the rhythm of class, synching my breath with the movement of my arms, legs and gaze, as instructed.
Back at home, I passed out on the couch.
World Cup, France vs. Senegal, at 3 p.m. I roused myself to join my family and friends at a restaurant in town. My husband is French, but we rooted for Senegal, who played a good game but lost. I got in a few laughs with our friends and an adrenaline boost from watching the match.
We went home, and I napped again.
I forced myself awake and went out for an evening stroll with my family and our neighbors. We paused to watch a bunny. My cheeks and face felt better from more smiles and laughter.
Back home, as my family winded down the day, I opened the windows wide to listen.
At dusk, the birds sang their last notes. I watched for the fireflies, and a few appeared, to my delight. I heard heavy footfalls in the leaf litter near my window and looked for the silhouettes of the deer who pass as they graze their way through our yard and the neighborhood. I heard the faint chirping of a cricket or two, but their summer chorus has yet to begin.

Amy Rhodes, of New Market, Maryland, took this photo in April at Baker Park in downtown Frederick while doing a senior photo shoot for her niece.
“It was a perfect clear, crisp, blustery spring day. We spent the afternoon wandering the park for miles taking hundreds of photos along the way,” Amy wrote in her submission.
“It was a lovely time spent together before my niece graduates and heads off to college this fall. We were struck by the peace and serenity of the whole park especially the sound of the waterfalls.”
