Good morning, DMV. It’s Wednesday, Oct. 28.
I joined birders yesterday morning to soak up nature at Hains Point, the southern tip of East Potomac Park, which may soon be inaccessible because of President Trump’s golf course plan.
A federal judge on Monday blocked the plan, but Trump said the administration will move ahead with the project and shut down the East Potomac Golf Course on Nov. 15.
Hains Point is accessible by a road that runs the perimeter of the park and golf course. It’s a popular spot for runners, cyclists and birders. However, a rendering of golf course plans that President Trump posted on Truth Social does not appear to include that road.
Now is the time to visit Hains Point. Do it while you can.
This week through Saturday, the DC Bird Alliance and Maryland Ornithological Society are leading daily bird walks at Hains Point to highlight the birding spot and raise awareness about impacts if the Trump administration moves ahead with plans to redevelop the East Potomac Golf Links into a championship-style 18-hole course.

The birding event — called “Hold the Point!” — was led yesterday by María-Elena Montero, president of the DC Bird Alliance, and Jeremy Castle, sanctuary chair of the Maryland Ornithological Society.
The birders among the group pointed out to us the species they saw and heard: a red-shouldered hawk, grackles, a Carolina wren (identified by its call), cormorants and so on. We pointed our binoculars this way and that to catch sight of them.
Andrew Kambour, who brought his camera with a very long lens, shared with me some amazing photos.

Do join the bird walks. It’s a lovely way to start the day, and this may be your last chance.

📰 News around the DMV
Capital Weather says: A few more clouds drift by, but highs in the mid-60s to near 70 still make for a lovely fall day. Read the full forecast here.

Abby Miller, 50, took this photo earlier this month of a barred owl that was outside her second-floor office at her home in Bethesda, Maryland.
“The crows were making a lot of noise, so I looked outside to see what was going on, they must have been trying to scare the owl away,” she wrote to me by email.
“It was definitely the closest I’d ever seen one! The picture was taken through a screen window so not as clear as it could be.”
And for fun, going forward, I’ll asking photo-sharers a few more questions:
Me: What are you reading?
Abby: “Whistler” by Ann Patchett.
Me: What are you watching or listening to?
Abby: “Ludwig” on BritBox, excellent comedy/detective series with British national treasure David Mitchell!
